A request by the Chamber of Commerce that litter containers be put on Pendleton streets has been tabled by the City Council. The request came at last night’s council meeting. The chamber asserted installation of receptacles would alleviate the unsightly condition of sidewalks caused by waste paper discarded by the public. Waste receptacles were on Main Street more than a year, until May 23, 1961, when Keith Roe of Western Display, who handled the cans, suggested that the city take over the business. Councilman Milt Hatfield last night said the council was not interested in going into the trash can business.

Plans are taking shape to provide “at risk” youth in Umatilla County an alternative education program. Several social agencies, school districts and the Umatilla County Education Service District have been working together on the program, which would provide an alternative for students who have not succeeded in the regular school system. Plans now call for two centers to be established with one in Pendleton to serve the east side of the county and the other in Hermiston to serve the west side. Sites for the classes have not been determined.
