Sheriff T.D. Taylor and Deputy Sheriff Jake Marin at 12:30 this afternoon captured Frank Johnson and Joe Wilson, two of the six convicts who escaped earlier in the week from a prison parole camp in the Willamette valley. The capture was made in one of the canyons near Cayuse after the fugitives had been trailed to their hiding place in the brush. It was not until Sheriff Taylor sent a bullet over their heads that they submitted to being taken. Johnson, who is an Indian of the Umatilla reservation and who was sent to prison from this county for cattle stealing, owns land on the reservation and, suspecting that he might return here, Sheriff Taylor had been on the lookout.

Twenty-one Pendleton servicemen, all former students at Helen McCune Junior High School, have enjoyed big boxes of homemade cookies sent them at their overseas posts this fall, by junior high students. Ewald Turner, principal of the school, said Army Pfc. Jack Baird, in Vietnam, reported that when the box of cookies arrived each man in his platoon took one of the coffee cans in the package “and consumed them all.”

Ken Thompson leads a double life. The 45-year-old dryland wheat rancher is as comfortable aboard a 119-foot turbo-prop P-3B determining the speed and depth of enemy submarines as he is maneuvering a combine over the rolling hills of Juniper Canyon. Thompson spends much of his time tending the 1,440-ace ranch his great-grandfather homesteaded in 1885. But for 100 to 120 days each year, this farmer with a master’s degree in animal science changes from overalls to dress blues and becomes Commander Kenneth E. Thompson of the U.S. Naval Reserve. Thompson is one of 13 naval reserve squadron commanders in the United States, and next September he’ll receive his fourth gold stripe when he is promoted to the rank of captain.
