Gov. Kate Brown said Friday at the Pendleton Round-Up that she will run for governor in 2016.

Brown is currently finishing out the first two years of the term of former Gov. John Kitzhaber. The special election next year will elect a governor for the remaining two years.

Kitzhaber resigned in February and Brown ascended from secretary of state to governor. That meant Friday’s Westward Ho! Parade was Brown’s first as Oregon’s chief executive.

“It doesn’t get better than this,” she said.

After the parade, Brown attended a luncheon at a North Hill home hosted by a bevy of local leaders. The luncheon was also attended by members of the Umatilla County Board of Commissioners and a bipartisan group of state legislators invited to the Round-Up by Rep. Greg Barreto, R-Cove.

The only other declared candidate at this point of the race is Republican Bud Pierce, an oncologist from Salem.
