HEPPNER — Nearly two dozen area ranchers and farmers helped firefighters from Hepper, Lexington and Ione extinguish a blaze that was sparked by lightning Friday evening.
“We had a monster lightning storm go through,” said Rusty Estes, chief of the Heppner Fire Department.
The blaze, which impacted approximately 700-800 acres, was off Highway 206 approximately three miles from the Ruggs area toward Condon, Estes said.
Other than an old barn that was destroyed, Estes said the fire chewed up dry grass and scrub brush in the area. Firefighters and other community volunteers contained the blaze in less than four hours, he said.
