Interstate 84 was closed at Threemile Canyon, about seven miles west of Boardman, for a multiple-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes on Thursday afternoon.
Around 12:04 p.m., the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about the accident. At least one semi tractor trailer, one pickup truck and one car, possibly more, were involved in the crash. A fire was reported under one vehicle with an entrapped patient. The fire was put out with a fire extinguisher.
Extrication equipment was requested for multiple people trapped in vehicles. A Life Flight helicopter landed at the scene around 12:50 p.m., and one person was transported via air ambulance. Several others were transported by ground ambulance.
Oregon Department of Transportation closed down the eastbound lanes of traffic at milepost 147, the Highway 74 exit.
Police said around 1:20 p.m. that the eastbound lanes are likely to be closed for some time. Emergency responders are working to divert eastbound traffic into one westbound lane so a single lane of traffic will be open in both directions.
ODOT was advised of fuel and vehicle fluids spilled on the road, and was scheduled to respond with a sand truck. Law enforcement vehicles from the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, Boardman and Oregon State Police, Boardman, Irrigon, and Arlington ambulances, Hermiston medics and the Boardman Fire Department were all on scene.
This is a breaking news story. The East Oregonian will update as additional information becomes available.
