PORTLAND — Pendleton senior Jenna Senter advanced through the first round at the 5A girls tennis OSAA State Championships with a two-set win over Redmond senior Greta Harris on Thursday.

Senter defeated Harris 7-6 (2), 6-4 to reach the quarterfinals, and was the only local to advance in the championship brackets.

She’ll face overall No. 1 seed Anna Kern, a sophomore from Corvallis that won her opening match 6-1, 6-0 over Wilsonville junior Sam Monello.

Pendleton coach Rocky Dillenburg said he thought Senter looked a little nervous to open her first-ever state match, and she fell behind 5-3 before rallying to tie at 6-6.

“Having all those people watching I think was a little intimidating,” Dillenburg said. “But then as a the match went on I think she got over that. She realized she could compete against this girls and settled in and controlled the match the rest of the way I thought.”

The Hermiston doubles team of Jaycee Ternes and Katelyn Millard fell in the first round 6-1, 6-1 to a team from Sandy.

They’ll open the consolation bracket today against a duo from Corvallis.
