WALLA WALLA — Hermiston took one of its shortest road trips on Wednesday, traveling to Walla Walla to face the Wa-Hi Blue Devils in a game that was supposed to open the Bulldogs’ season.

After the Hermiston football team claimed its second state title in program history, the decision was made to move the previously-scheduled Nov. 29 meeting between the schools to later in the season. That day came on Wednesday and with it a rough 57-37 Bulldogs loss.

The Blue Devils (3-1) hosted the Bulldogs (3-4) for their home opener, and Wa-Hi put on a show for its home crowd.

After a close first half where Hermiston held a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter and Wa-Hi rallied to take control of the game with a three-point lead of its own, 25-22, the second half was on pace to be just as excited.

But the Blue Devils never relinquished their lead. Holding the Bulldogs to a single-digit third quarter, the Blue Devils ran away with the game handing Hermiston its second loss in as many days.

“I think we left everything on the bus,” head coach Casey Arstein said after the game. “We didn’t show up at all.”

The performance was hard for the second-year coach to recap, but turnovers and laziness on offense hurt the Bulldogs.

“Guys need to step up,” Arstein said. “We need to move the ball better as a team, but first we’ve got to take care of the ball if we want to share the ball.”

The Blue Devils took advantage of Hermiston’s miscues with senior Tyler Greene leading the way.

Greene led Wa-Hi with 14 points. Fellow senior Parker Likes was the only other Blue Devil to score in double digits, and knocked down 10 points.

For the second night, junior Ryne Andreason led Hermiston scoring 15 points. Andreason did the most damage in the first half, scoring nine of his 15 points.

It will be a short trip back for Hermiston but the Bulldogs will need to shake off this performance as they prepare for another away game. Hermiston will face Lewiston (ID) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
