PHS’ Jerome, Bower earn Linebacker’s Club scholarships
PENDLETON — The Pendleton Linebacker’s Club handed out its two annual scholarships this week to a pair of Pendleton High seniors that will be playing football at the collegiate level.
Shaw Jerome, who will play football at Western Oregon University, was awarded the Don Requa Award which brings a $10,000 value and Nick Bower, who will play at Pacific University, earned the Alex Stuvland Memorial Scholarship with a $4,000 value. The Don Requa Award has been handed out by the Linebacker’s Club every year since 1989 and the Stuvland scholarship has been handed out since 2007.
Bower and Jerome were Pendleton’s top two offensive players for each of the past two seasons. Bower threw for 2,051 yards and scored 29 touchdowns and Jerome hauled in 51 passes for 636 yards and six touchdowns, with the latter earning second team all-state honors.
Pendleton 5th graders win La Grande Shootout
A group of fifth graders from Pendleton put together a perfect weekend at the Pepsi Subway Shootout tournament in La Grande on Jan. 27-28.
The team, coached by former Hermiston girls varsity coach Steve Hoffert and former Pendleton boys varsity assistant Mitch Morioka, defeated Joseph, Hermiston and Baker on Jan. 27 and then defeated La Grande on Jan. 28 to reach the finals.
In the championship, the Bucks WCTP narrowly defeated Hermiston 32-27 to claim victory.
“Thank you to all the families that traveled and supported the boys at the tourney,” Hoffert said in an email.
The team roster consists of Mason Morioka, Jaydon Hoffert, Kaden Moore, Payton Hoffert, Colson Primus, Carter Cary, Evan Lehnert, Jake Neistadt, Tucker Sams, Griffin Coiner and Cooper Tallman.
Big River hosting Valentine’s outing
HERMISTON — Big River Golf Course is aiming to give golfers a big challenge for Valentine’s Day.
The course is hosting a ‘Valentine’s Massacre’ on Feb. 17 with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. Big River is setting up a difficult course, and put a warning label on the signup flyer, stating ‘This tournament is not for the faint of heart!’
The entry fee for members is $25 and for non-members is $35, and the payout will be based on participation. The tournament will be 18-hole stroke play, with handicaps in play, though for an extra $10 a side gross and net cash skins game will be available.

McLoughlin High announces Hall of Fame Weekend
MILTON-FREEWATER — McLoughlin High will host its annual Hall of Fame weekend on Sept. 7-8 to welcome in the school’s latest class of great alumni.
The 2018 inductees will be introduced prior to the Pioneers’ football game against Tillamook at 7 p.m. on Sept. 7, and then will be officially inducted the next night at a ceremony at the M-F Community Building.
Inductees will be announced on June 22 and alumni and community members are encouraged to send their nominations to Vice Principal Jay Rodighiero at Jay.Rodighiero (at) MiltFree.k12.or.us. or mailed to 120 S. Main St. in Milton-Freewater, postmarked by June 8.
