CONDON — The Summit Springs volleyball tournament in Condon took place Saturday and hosted schools including Stanfield, Umatilla, Ione, and Union.

The tournament began with a match between Ione and Condon/Wheeler, resulting in an Ione win, 25-12 and 25-21. Condon/Wheeler also lost to Prairie City, 25-14 and 25-9, and then went on to claim victory against Ione, 25-14 and 25-21.

However, the Condon/Wheeler Knights were defeated by Union, 25-14 and 25-9.

Stanfield began their day with a win against Prairie City, 26-24 and 25-23, then lost against Union, 25-18 and 25-10, only to end the tournament with another win against Condon/Wheeler, 25-22 and 25-16.

“I really liked how we came out of the gate and grabbed our first match win against Prairie City,” said Stanfield coach Blaine Ganvoa. “Union was a battle and showed us we still have to work to do.”

Heppner wins Helix Invite tourney

HELIX — The Heppner Mustangs claimed the top spot at the Helix Invite volleyball tournament on Saturday, besting Riverside and Dufur and upsetting the Imbler Panthers to close the competition, 25-19, 25-14.

Imbler had previously beat Helix and Cove before falling to Heppner.

Helix was 0-3 in pool play before losing to Imbler in the tournament’s first round.

“We struggled to find consistency in our offense and on our serve, and gave away too many free points,” said Helix coach Daniel Headley. “The girls never gave up, even with the struggles, and still worked together as a team. We have been tinkering with our lineups, and that is on me to better prepare them.”

Kyleen Stahancyk ended the tournament with 30 digs, while Annie Wood had 26.

Helix will host the Elgin Huskies on Tuesday.
