Union XC takes state title; Heppner third

After strong showings at last week’s cross-country state qualifier in Pendleton, Union and Heppner continued to prove their worth at Saturday’s 3A/2A/1A state championships in Eugene. Union won the title while Heppner finished third as a team.

Union senior Tim Stevens finished first overall with a time of 15:08.6. Stevens ran well ahead of his competition ­­— his closest rival was East Linn Christian’s Jedaiah Wasson, who finished at 15:43.0.

Heppner’s Hunter Nichols led the Mustangs, placing third in the men’s 2A/1A race at 15:52.3. The Mustangs placed third and scored 102 points for the meet, barely falling below St. Stephen’s Academy with 101 points.

Union senior Jack Silveira crossed the finish line at fourth, clocking in at 16:01.0. Union’s first-place win was earned with 44 points, leaving the rest of the pack in their dust.
