Gil Gutierrez was born September 6, 1950, in Cayey, Puerto Rico. He was the son of Gilberto Gutierrez and Maria Vasquez. He passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on Sunday, January 7, 2018.
Gil grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey. He attended Princeton and NYU. Throughout his life, he was a true “Renaissance Man.” He served as a medical social worker at St. Mary’s Hospital in Hoboken, N.J., and worked for the DEA. He was a social worker for Aging and Long Term Care and member of the Tribal
Juvenile Accountability Board. He was a carpenter at St. Andrew’s Mission for 15 years.
His hobbies include grotto making, hobby farming, carpentry, playing guitar, writing poetry, storytelling and collecting friends wherever he was. Gil was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his father Gilberto Gutierrez and his brother Charlie Gutierrez. He is survived by his wife Marguerite Gutierrez; mother Maria Gutierrez; son David Gutierrez, daughter Danielle Gutierrez, daughter Bonnie Buderus Kandel (Ryan), daughter Grace Buderus and son Peter Buderus
(Rachael); eight grandchildren: Porter Kandel, Deke Kandel, Leif Kandel, Colin Casey, Izakk Casey, Hazel Buderus, Ian Buderus and Alice Buderus; brother Tony Gutierrez (Madeline); and sisters Gloria Grieco (Pete), Mimi Flagg (Jim) and Dr. Lissette Gutierrez (Tom).
Funeral mass will be held this Saturday, January 13, 2018, at 4 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Mission, followed by a potluck reception at St. Andrew’s Mission.
The family requests memorial donations can be given to the Red Cross Disaster Relief for Puerto Rico, The Oregon Nurse’s Association or St. Andrew’s Mission in care of Burns Mortuary, 336 S.W. Dorion Ave., Pendleton, OR 97801.
