Lyla Marie Johnston passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on January 29, 2018. She was 97.
She was born July 20, 1920, in the small farming community of Selden, Kansas, to Roy and Eva (Cole) Rogers. Lyla was one of seven children. She graduated as valedictorian of her high school class of 1938.
Shortly after graduating, she married Clarence Johnston and they moved to central Oregon and then later to Pendleton, Oregon, where they lived for the next 50 years. She and Clarence moved to Parkview Assisted Living in Colville, Washington, in 2004. Lyla and Clarence were married for 72 years prior to his death in 2010. Lyla later moved to Buena Vista nursing home in Colville, and then to Panorama Convalescent & Rehab center in Lacey, Washington, to be near her children.
Lyla was a stay-at-home mother and housekeeper until her children graduated from high school. She was a wonderful cook and seamstress, making most of the children’s clothing. She baked wonderful bread and cookies. She loved to fish, hunt and camp out. Her flower gardens were outstanding.
Lyla would later work for J. C. Penney, holding every position in the store.
She set up and supervised the store’s computer catalog department. She retired with 30 years of service.
Lyla was a wonderful person, wife, mother and friend. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Lyla was preceded by her husband, Clarence, and six siblings. She is survived by her children Leila Roberts, Lacey, Wash., Roger (Sandy) Johnston, Vancouver, Wash., and Sharon (Terry) Covey, Lacey, Wash.; sister Wilburma of Prineville, Ore.; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service for Lyla M. Johnston was held on February 3, 2018, at Mt. View Park in Colville, Wash., where she was laid to rest next to her beloved husband Clarence.
