Opal M. Barnett of Athena, Oregon, formerly of Weston, passed away April 11, 2018 at the Athena House Adult Care Home in Athena at the age of 92 years. Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home in Milton-Freewater, Oregon. Concluding services and interment will be in the Weston Cemetery, Weston, Oregon.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Weston-McEwen High School Band through the funeral home.
Opal was born in Sterling, Idaho, on Jan. 20, 1926, the daughter of John William And Minnie Belle Yoke McMillan. She was the third youngest of 11 children. She moved to Athena at an early age and graduated from McEwen High School in 1946. That same year she married Glenn Dowd and they had two sons. The couple divorced in 1949.
On August 24, 1949, she married Donald Barnett in Weston. They had four children, an adopted daughter and a foster son.
Opal was active in Scouting in Weston for a number of years and achieved the Silver Beaver Award in Scouting. For a number of years, Don and Opal cared for foster children in their home. For almost 30 years Opal put flags on veterans’ graves in Weston on Memorial Day. She served as Weston’s mayor for one term.
She is survived by daughters Carol (Jerry) Hanson of North Powder, Ore., and Marlene Parsons of Pendleton, Ore.; sons Michael (Judy) Dowd of Weston, Ore., Allen (JoAnne) Barnett of Roseburg, Ore., and Greg Blalock of Walla Walla, Wash.; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Opal was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Melvin; daughter Debbie; three grandchildren, Dawn, Stefanie and Jared; a son-in-law, Dale, her parents; 10 brothers and sisters; and her husband Don of 39 years.
