The Hermiston Lions Club was recently recognized by the American Youth Soccer Organization.

AYSO Regional commissioner Erik Juarez expressed appreciation for a $1,000 donation, which contributed to the support of six local teams. Money for the donation was generated from the annual Don Horneck Memorial Dinner. Don Horneck, who died unexpectedly in 2014, was a Lions Club member and an avid supporter of AYSO and other youth programs.

While the Hermiston Lions Club’s main mission is to help provide eyeglasses and hearing aids to those in need, the group also contributes to other important organizations or projects within the Hermiston community. Club president Phillip Spicerkuhn said the Hermiston group was pleased to honor Horneck’s memory by being able to contribute to the local AYSO program.

“Don contributed to our community in many ways but one certainly important to him was the youth soccer program,” Spicerkuhn said.
