A member of the Oregon National Guard is the first recipient of a VFW Auxiliary Scholarship Fund at the Milton-Freewater center of Blue Mountain Community College.

Ana Urueta, who is currently finishing her nursing prerequisites at BMCC M-F, received a scholarship for the 2017-18 winter term. The special fund was created after members of Milton-Freewater Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 4567 voted to make the donation.

Due to inactive membership, it became necessary for the auxiliary to dissolve as a group and give up their charter, said Marcia Akes, the group’s secretary. The auxiliary presented $1,750 to BMCC and requested that scholarships be awarded to current military personnel, veterans or members of a veteran’s family who attend classes at the Milton-Freewater center.

“The funds can be used for tuition, books or emergency needs of worthy students,” Akes said.

Center director Susan Kralman was pleased to accept the donation from the veterans support organization. Recipients and dollar amounts are determined by a scholarship committee under her guidance.
