The operator of a barge on the Columbia River rescued two people from the water late Tuesday afternoon.
Around 6 p.m., Umatilla County sheriff’s deputies reported that a barge had picked up two people in the water, west of Umatilla. A caller on Southshore Drive had reported the incident to officers.
Umatilla County Sheriff Terry Rowan said a small boat had capsized, and both occupants had fallen into the water. As of 6:30 p.m., Rowan said he did not know why the boat capsized, or the names, ages, or genders of the occupants.
Both occupants were found in the water and pulled onto the barge tug. The barge was directed to stop at a dock at the Port of Morrow in Boardman so the rescued boaters could be let off and receive medical attention.
Rowan said after being pulled from the water, both boaters were reported to have symptoms of moderate hypothermia, but were otherwise stable.
