Retired colonel to be guest speaker

PENDLETON - G. Thomas Greco, retired U.S. Army colonel, will be the special guest speaker for the Pendleton After Five Club's guest night, Tuesday, Dec. 10.

Greco served 24 years during peace and war in Europe, Asia, Panama and in the United States. He will present his personal experiences leading an air assault infantry battalion task force deep behind enemy lines during Operation Desert Storm. Greco and his wife, Gail, have three children and now live in Eagle, Idaho.

Karen Lange and the Chimes of Peace will present music for the evening.

Guest night is open to the public. Everyone is invited to bring a spouse, friend or neighbor to the special event at 6:30 p.m. at the Pendleton Convention Center.

Tickets for the event must be ordered by Monday. Specify meal choice of honey chicken or Swiss steak at time of ticket purchase. Tickets are $13.50 per person. Irrigon tree lighting slated for Sunday

IRRIGON - The annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony is planned for 5 p.m. Sunday at the Irrigon City Park across from the fire station.

Following the tree lighting, special entertainment is scheduled along with the singing of Christmas carols and the arrival of Santa Claus with candy canes.

Refreshments will be served inside the fire station following the event. The public is welcome.

Salvation Army helping families

The Salvation Army is taking applications for Christmas assistance for families in need.

In the Pendleton area, apply at the Salvation Army Community Center at 150 S.E. Emigrant, Pendleton. For more information, call Carmen at 276-3369.

In the Hermiston area, apply at the Blue Mountain Community College West Campus at 980 S.E. Columbia Drive. Direct questions to Becky or Cherrill at 567-0490.

Applicants are required to bring documentation of the following information for their application: proof of income, proof of address, proof of identification for everyone for whom you are applying and copies of monthly bills. Those who have already signed up for other Christmas assistance are not eligible to sign up with the Salvation Army.

Angel Tree and Adopt-a-Family programs are underway as well. Those interested in participating should call Carmen at 276-3369.

Memorial service set for Monday

HERMISTON - The seventh annual Community Memorial Service is set for 7 p.m. Monday at the Rose Arbor Assisted Living Facility, 540 N.W. 12th St., Hermiston.

The public is welcome to attend the Hospice-sponsored service to honor loved ones who have died. The service is one of reflection, inspiration and healing, sponsored by Vange John Memorial Hospice.

AIDS memorial service planned

WALLA WALLA - A candlelight procession and memorial service are planned beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Whitman College Clock Tower to commemorate World AIDS Day.

The procession will end at the First Congregational Church where a service will be held beginning at 7:30 p.m. The public is welcome at either or both events.

This year marked the 10,000th AIDS case diagnosed in Washington state. As in past years, part of the memorial service will be reading names of departed loved ones.

Red Cross to hold blood drive Dec. 9

PENDLETON - The American Red Cross Umatilla County Chapter will hold a community blood drive from 1-6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9 at the Pendleton Recreation Center, 500 S.W. Dorion.

Donors must be 17 or older, weigh at least 105 pounds and be in good health. All blood types are needed every day.

Senior program seeks sponsors

PENDLETON - The Adopt-a-Senior-Citizen program is organizing to locate sponsors for all of the senior citizens in assisted living and nursing home facilities in and around Pendleton.

Sponsorships of $30 would provide gifts, wrapping and delivery of a gift to the many senior citizens in the area.
