Young musicians to compete Saturday

PENDLETON - Pianists, violinists, cellists, trombonists and a percussionist playing a marimba concerto will compete in the annuyal Oregon East Symphony and Chorale's Young Artist Competition beginning at noon Saturday at the Vert Clubroom.

Competition will continue until all participants have performed. Admission is free. Co-chairwomen for the event are Martha Warberg and Cheryl Marier.

Cash awards will be given to both junior and senior division winners. In addition, the senior division winner will appear as a guest soloist with the OES next season. The winner of the junior division will appear as guest soloist with the OES A-Sharp Players.

Oregon East Symphony has sponsored young artist competitions since 1987, when the symphony was first organized.

OES to preview 'Carmen' for area fourth graders

PENDLETON - A young people's performance of Carmen will be presented Thursday, April 15 for area school children.

Students will be bused to the Vert auditorium for a special preview performance conducted by Ken Woods.

The Young People's Concert is an annual offering of the Oregon East Symphony's Playing for Keeps program.

Cheryl Carlson and Roberta Foss Jones have collaborated to develop a special guide to help tell the story of Carmen and encourage an understanding of opera as a specific musical genre. The guide will be available for teachers prior to the concert.
