Pendleton may yet have a park in the east end of the city despite the recent rejection of the city site by the Round-up association for a stadium and athletic park. The water commission took the first step toward improving the tract owned by the city at a meeting held Tuesday when a motion was adopted signifying the willingness of the commission to apportion four or five hundred dollars for that purpose providing the city council would furnish a like sum.

Jan. 6, 1961

In the wake of the finding of a rabid bat in Pendleton, the Umatilla County health officer today suggested dog owners have their animals immunized against rabies. Dr. Walter P. Browne advised dog owners to take this action as a course of prevention that is easier to carry out than a cure once rabies has been found. Dr. Browne said his statement was not designed to cause alarm, because there hasn’t been a known case of rabies in a human in the county in at least the last 10 years.

An ice storm knocked out power across three counties in Northeastern Oregon Sunday and sent cars skidding across ice-coated roads. At least 10 people were admitted to area hospitals early Sunday morning when the Greyhound bus they were riding in slid off an icy section of Interstate 84 just east of the Stanfield junction. Cars also slid off the Mission Highway and Airport Road in Pendleton this morning, but no injuries were reported. Andy Anderson of the National Weather Service in Pendleton said he counted 15 cars, including a taxi cab, in the ditch off Airport Road.
