“Snowy” Gustafson’s undefeated Mac-Hi Pioneers swept on toward the Oregon high school football championship here yesterday with a hard-fought, spectacular 14 to 0 victory over the stubborn Pendleton high school eleven, which surprised fans by holding the highly touted Mac-Hi outfit on even terms for more than half of the game. From the time that shifty, little Wayne McKee, Pendleton’s lone offensive threat, ripped through the center of the Pioneer line on the first play of the game for 10 yards and a first down, until Don Murray plunged across the goal line early in the fourth quarter for the second Pioneer score the championship-bound Pioneers were never certain of victory.

Nov. 12, 1961

The Rayborn brothers, Walter and Miller, were the sweepstakes winners at the Umatilla County Potato show in Weston. In the seed potatoes division, the brothers won first in both Netted Gems and other varieties. J.L. Smock won first in Netted Gems in the commercial division, and the Rayborn brothers won first in other varieties. The Weston Mountain Neighborhood club and the Jolly Circle Club each won a first place for their farm displays. The Neighborhood Club featured grains grown on a farm and the byproducts of the grains. The Jolly Circle Club had an old fashioned cellar as its theme.

Closed since July, Umatilla’s city library will reopen two days a week with a volunteer staff. Charles McKenzie, a retired railroad worker, has volunteered to be librarian on Wednesdays and Saturdays. He will be assisted by other volunteers. LaVera McDaniel, a former principal at McNary Heights Elementary School who spent more than 20 years as a librarian and library administrator, has volunteered to direct technical work and training of volunteers.
