Born at 1:48 a.m. today, Miss Martha Hattery, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H.H. Hattery, is apparently the winner of the Pendleton Baby Derby and all the prizes that go with the honor. She was born at St Anthony’s hospital. According to the rules of the contest, the first baby born after 12:01 a.m. January 1 is to receive the awards made by Pendleton business houses, and Martha is the only baby reported since the dawn of 1937. Runner-up in the contest was a baby boy born at 11:10 p.m. last night, to Mrs. and Mrs Gilbert Depuy of the Alta Apartments.

Ina Claire’s husband of 22 years says he and his wife are vacationing in Palm Springs, Calif., and that the former actress is not living in Oregon. A Stanfield man reported Friday that he had married Ina Claire in a Dec. 17 ceremony. Leonard Buchanan, a comparative newcomer at Stanfield, reiterated Saturday that the woman he married at Pasco, Wash., in mid-December was the former actress. Police Chief John Hoskins of Stanfield said Buchanan’s bride, operator of a beauty parlor and known as Mrs. Claire Hamilton, had also told others she was the former actress.

Lance Wilson, the only two-time state champion wrestler for Pendleton High School, wants to make the 1988 Olympic team, and if intensity has anything to do with it, expect him to make it. The 1979 PHS graduate hates to lose, as evidenced by the way he tossed opponents around the mat Tuesday night in an alumni wrestling match. His strong desire to win led him to the state title as a 115-pound junior and as a 136-pound senior. In February of 1979, he roared to a district crown, then won four matches at state by a combined score of 53-11. He won the championship 11-4. At 173 pounds of muscle, Wilson plans to drop nearly 25 pounds to wrestle at 149.5 when he returns to college.
