With a team on the field which lacked one of the finest ball carriers in Eastern Oregon last year, Bob Still, the slightly demoralized Pioneers overcame the scrappy Gladiators from Athena and came out on top 12 to 0. With the dismissal of Bustin’ Bob Still from the squad for continued breakage of training the Pioneers appeared to be slight favorites over Athena at game time. Pulling the team out of holes which the many Gladiator punts placed them, Robinson showed his heels to dozens of Gladiator tacklers as he led his team to victory.

Sept. 26-27, 1961

A Condon truck service operator says he’ll be forced out of business unless the public utilities commissioner reverses a ruling that allows Union Pacific Railroad to transport merchandise to Morrow, Sherman and Gilliam counties. Following Bill Flatt’s appeal, the Heppner-Morrow County Chamber of Commerce voted to request the PUC to reopen a hearing on the matter. The railroad was given permission, effective Sept. 15, to operate a motor freight service in the three counties. Flatt said the railroad company would not make door to door delivery by truck.

A man who eluded police officers after a high-speed chase through downtown Pendleton Wednesday evening was arrested — cold, tired and slightly injured — Thursday afternoon north of town. Leonard Jensen Jr., 34, Selma, Calif., was arrested at about 2:15 near a wheat field northeast of Fulton Elevator. Jensen is charged with eluding an officer, reckless driving and hit and run, and more charges are likely to be filed, police officials said.
