At 9 o’clock this morning with the flags floating at half mast from many buildings, and with all business suspended, the Memorial Day parade, headed by the Round-up Cowboy band marched through the streets. In line were members of the Grand Army of the Republic, fewer by several than last year, members of the United Spanish War Veterans, members of lodges and citizens in automobiles and other vehicles. Ending at Alta street, the participants were loaded into conveyances and transported to the cemetery where following the decoration of the graves, Judge Stephen A. Flowers and vegetables growing in an old greenhouse are expected to beautify the grounds and feed the inmates at Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution. Inmate Tom Blossom is in charge of the greenhouse, which sat empty until April 1 on the EOCI grounds. Jim Aldrich, EOCI grounds keeper, supervises the horticultural work. The prison ordered 4,600 flower plugs to start in the greenhouse and, along with Great Marigolds and Geishas, several fruit and vegetable varieties are being grown from seed, Aldrich said. Blossom was raised on a farm in Michigan and has been involved with gardening all his life.
