REDMOND, Wash. - Smaranda Balasiu and Brian Lieuallen, both of Redmond, were married Sept. 1, 2002 in a double-ring ceremony at Saint Spiridon Orthodox Cathedral in Seattle.
The Rev. Ioan Catana performed the ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Ion and Alexandrina Balasiu of Iasi, Romania. Lieuallen is the son of Bob and Penny Lieuallen of Pendleton.
Six members of the bride's family, including her parents, traveled from Romania to attend the wedding, Elena Valceanu of Bucherest, an aunt; Suzana and Bogdan Hatescu and their daughter Tina of Iasi, the sister, brother-in-law and niece of the bride.
The couple combined Romanian and American customs throughout the ceremony.
The bride wore the lace wedding gown and cathedral length-veil worn by the bridegroom's paternal grandmother, Dorothy Straughan Lieuallen in 1934. She carried a nosegay of white roses.
A wedding reception was held at the Hyatt Regency in Bellevue, Wash. The bride wore a contemporary off-the-shoulder floor-length gown.
The bride graduated in 1992 from Politechnic Institute in Iasi, Romania, with a degree in computer science. She works for Microsoft.
The bridegroom graduated in 1990 from Washington State University with a degree in computer science. He works for Microsoft.
The couple live in Redmond.
