HERMISTON — A chef who was recognized as a “Champion of Change” by the White House for his work with school nutrition programs will give a presentation on nutritious foods for kids and adults. Garrett Berdan will lead the session, which includes cooking demonstrations, for staff of Umatilla Morrow Head Start.

Although the event is open to the public, those who don’t work for Head Start must pre-register. The class is Thursday, Aug. 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hermiston Conference Center, 415 S. Highway 395. For more information, call Jessi Edwards or Chelle Hankinson at 541-564-6878.

Berdan, a registered dietitian, chef and culinary educator, focuses on healthy menu needs without sacrificing flavor. As a Chefs Move to Schools volunteer, Berdan contributed a story to first lady Michelle Obama’s book, “American Grown,” about introducing new foods to kids through experiences called show-tell-and-taste.
