In celebration of its 100th anniversary, Pendleton Woolen Mills has announced its ?Spirit of the Family? contest.

The contest requires a written short story, of 500 words or less, describing the entrant?s family history and what makes their family special. Additionally, up to three photographs can be submitted along with the entry to help bring the story to life.

Pendleton Woolen Mills will weave 12 blankets inspired by the winning entry ? calling it the ?Spirit of the Family Blanket.? With 12 blankets, the winner can share the unique gift with family and friends.

The deadline for entry into the contest is April 30. Winners will be notified by May 30.

A panel of judges will select the winning entry based on creativity, originality and authenticity.

During the past couple of decades, the company has developed a series of Legendary blankets, which are created to reflect the beliefs and traditions of American Indians.

The history of American Indians has been woven into blankets for centuries. Not only do they provide warmth, but also have been used for trading, to reflect artistic expression and have played a role in tribal ceremonies and councils.

Each year Pendleton Woolen Mills presents a new commemorative pattern, which includes a suede patch describing the design?s story.

The blankets provide colorful decor mounted on walls, draped across couches and at the foot of beds. The collectible heirlooms of future generations are used and enjoyed in every day life.
