HERMISTON -You may be the winner of a big hog - a 2002 Harley Davidson Softtail Standard hog that is - if you attend the 12th annual "Pig-Out and Raffle."
The Hermiston Knights of Columbus is sponsoring the 21 years and older Italian spaghetti dinner (with salad, breadsticks, dessert and wine) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22., at the Hermiston Community Center. After the dinner an auction and two raffles will take place.
"The original Pig-Out started when Bob Shannon donated a pig for raffle," Bill Elfering, of the Knights, said. "Thus the name 'Pig-Out.'"
The dinner and raffle kept growing and evolving, all in keeping with the theme. A pigskin, Seattle Seahawk football was auctioned. A whole and a half of pig, cut and wrapped to the specifications of the raffle winners are raffled each year. About five years ago the Knights purchased a Harley Davidson hog for raffle, which has been a great success. Besides the Harley raffle and pig raffles, the event includes an auction.
"People are really generous in giving," Elfering said. "The last three years, both Dr. Flaizs donated hand-made lace from India that has been a big item. The auction brings in about $12,000 to $15,000."
The proceeds benefit the Knights of Columbus, who give it away to various projects and charities and use some for the upkeep of the parish hall and church building fund at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, Elfering said.
Projects include the sponsorship of a Boy Scout troop, four college scholarships, Temple House Medical Clinic in Portland, a home for unwed mothers and other charities that benefit the local community both directly and indirectly, he said.
Tickets for the event are $15 for an individual, $100 for a table of eight and $120 for a table of 10. Raffle tickets for the Harley are $10 each and $1 each for the dollar raffle.
Items for the Harley Raffle include a chance to win the grand prize 2002 Softtail, first prize $1,000 gift certificate to Latus Motors, second prize one week rental of a Harley from Latus Motors, or third prize $500 gift certificate from Latus Motors. The Harley will be on display at the Sportsman Show in Pendleton today and at Greg's Tavern in Irrigon from Sunday until Friday, and will be at the event on Saturday, Feb. 22.
The "Dollar Raffle" grand prize is a half of beef with a freezer, first prize a whole pig cut and wrapped and second a half pig cut and wrapped.
