West Hills Intermediate School in Pendleton concluded its annual "Battle of the Books" challenge this week, pitting dozens of teams to answer questions about children's books.

Taking top honors this year was the team American Barbie Dolls: fifth-graders Delaney Clem, Cheyenne Carey and Sydney Jones. The runners-up were Braidon Wood, T.J. O'Hanlon and Michael Swanson, competing as team My Little Ponies.

West Hills Principal Shelley Liscom said the school has held its own version of Battle of the Books for years. Several other schools in Pendleton and Hermiston also stage similar competitions, she added.

More than 30 teams competed in the West Hills competition. Books used in the challenge included E.B. White's "Stuart Little," Gary Paulsen's "Hatchet" and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" by J.K. Rowling.
