Blue Mountain Community College recently awarded the Wallace McCrae Student Athletes of the Year awards to Ryan Strand and Stephanie Lopez. The Wallace McCrae award is given to one male and one female sophomore student athlete who have demonstrated not only excellence in their chosen sport, but also in the classroom. Wallace McCrae was the first president of Blue Mountain Community College.
Strand, a forward from Meridian, Idaho will join the Morningside menÂ’s basketball team next season. He earned second-team all-region honors this past season and was the ninth leading rebounder in the NWAACC with an average of 8.67 rebounds per game. Strand also was the teamÂ’s leading scorer with an average of 15.5 points per game.
Lopez, a guard from Wilmington, Calif will join the University of San Francisco womenÂ’s basketball team next season. She was BMCCÂ’s all-time leader in points with 1,177 in two seasons. Lopez posted career highs in assists (124) and steals (91) as a sophomore, bringing her collegiate totals to 240 and 163, respectively. Lopez helped lead her team to its first ever NWAACC appearance.
