An annual volunteer luncheon recognized the efforts of 139 volunteers at the Good Shepherd Health Care System. The June 14 event highlighted the service of 81 hospital auxiliary members, four junior volunteers, 13 CareVan volunteers and 41 Vange John Memorial Hospice volunteers.

Cindy Schaan, director of volunteer services, coordinated and emceed the event. In addition, Kelly Sanders, vice president human resources, was on hand to talk about volunteerism and updated those present on the organization’s accomplishments.

Each volunteer was presented with a certificate of appreciation, which showed the number of hours volunteered over the year. Over the fiscal year, 15,935 hours of volunteer service were logged — which is equivalent to eight full-time employees.

Money raised trough the hospital auxiliary is used to purchase medical equipment for the hospital, to provide scholarships for individuals pursuing careers in the medical field and to help fund the File of Life Program. Grants and money raised through the hospice program are used for bereavement and educational opportunities in the for the community and to assist clients and their family members. CareVan grants and donations are used to assist with the program’s operating expenses.
