Spitters go the distance

Men, women, youth and children vied for bragging rights and competed for hats and T-shirts as the Hermiston Watermelon Growers sponsored a watermelon seed spitting contest Aug. 15 at the Umatilla County Fair. Winners in each category were:

Ages 7 and under: Kara Swanson, Jayziah Williams. Youth 8-15: Josiah Barron, Mark Turley, Shasta Jundt. Women: Nellie Sanchez, Pamela Stiles, Mariah Turner. Men: Kevin Forsythe, Joey Williams, Jerry Reeves, Jason Young.

As first place winners in their division, Swanson, Barron, Sanchez and Forsythe will be listed at www.oregonfresh.net. The contest was part of Oregon's Best Competitions, held at numerous fairs over the summer.
