A one-car roll-over resulted in the death of a passenger Friday morning, just north of the Powerline Road exit on Interstate 82. Oregon State Police have not released the names of the victims.
John Hamilton, who was about a quarter of a mile behind the Dodge Caravan involved in the roll-over, said he saw dirt kick up ahead and then the driver of the van overcorrected, causing the van to flip once and land on its wheels.
"The driver drove straight to the inside median, then overcorrected," said Hamilton, who was riding his motorcycle enroute to Salem. "I saw the dirt and thought 'what was that?' I think he (the driver) fell asleep at the wheel, but he said something got under his wheels."
The passenger was ejected from the van, Hamilton said. The pair were apparently traveling from Seattle to Portland via I82, he said.
Tom Bohm, Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services fire marshal, said the passenger was having trouble breathing and was transported immediately to Good Shepherd Medical Center. The driver was also transported but was ambulatory.
Mark Ettesvold, spokesperson for Good Shepherd, confirmed that the passenger was deceased but could confirm nothing else without the names of the victims.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
