UMATILLA — Oregon State Police reported the semitruck driver who died Friday night in a crash near Umatilla was not wearing a seat belt.
State police troopers and other emergency personnel responded to the report of a single semi crash at approximately 9:40 p.m. on Interstate 82 near milepost 10. State police on Monday reported Domingo Diaz Martin, 57, of Yakima, Washington, was driving the tractor-trailer east on Interstate 82 when he took the off ramp to merge onto I-84 eastbound.
He did not navigate the curve and the semi drifted off the road and onto the shoulder, where the semitrailer rolled onto its side. Diaz Martin was not wearing his seat belt, according to state police, and the crash ejected him from the vehicle. He was dead when troopers arrived.
The passenger, Tashina Mautmolis Bettles, 28, of Wapato, Washington, also was not wearing her seat belt. She suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, according to state police, and a helicopter ambulance flew her to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Washington.
State police also reported alcohol and the speed of the vehicle may have been factors in the crash.
