Oregon State Police are searching for a robber they said awakened a napping motorist at gunpoint Sunday afternoon at the Interstate 84 rest area near Stanfield.
According to state police, a 40-year-old Washington man stopped his sport utility vehicle Sunday at about 4:20 p.m. to sleep at the westbound Stanfield rest area near Milepost 186.
The man parked on the on-ramp shoulder west of the main parking area, his SUV?windows down. A man pointing a handgun awakened the driver and demanded his wallet, state police reported. The motorist gave the wallet, and the robber walked back to his vehicle and drove westbound on Interstate 84.
State troopers and officers from the Boardman and Umatilla police departments and Morrow County Sheriff's Office searched along Interstate 84 and Interstate 82 but couldn't find the suspect or vehicle.
The suspect is described as a black male, 25-35 years old, 6 feet to 6 feet 2 inches tall, medium build, missing upper front left tooth, clean shaven and wearing a gray, hooded sweatshirt.
The robbers vehicle is described as a late 1980s to early 1990s full-size white Chevrolet pickup with unknown license plates. The pickup had custom straight dual exhaust visible under the rear bumper.
State police asked that anyone with information regarding the suspect to call the agency at 541-922-5751. Trooper Mark Amos is the lead investigator.
