ATHENA - The Athena-Weston Education Resource Enhancement board approved projects for the first funding cycle of projects on Wednesday.

The group, AWERE, distributed $50,150 in grants in three categories, Secretary Dave Lynde said.

The funding was a combination of two years of donations by FPL Energy as part of a community improvement program associated with the Vansycle wind power project. FPL Energy contributed $25,000 annually to AWERE.

The board approved:

n $18,000 for six decorative street lights requested by Partners Promoting Athena.

n $21,000 requested by Weston for sidewalk improvements along Main Street.

n $11,150 for the Athena-Weston School District to resurface the tennis courts and purchase a camera and protective covering for the weather site.

The county commissioners have to make the final approval of projects. The board will begin accepting applications for the next funding cycle in January.
