BAKER CITY - "Country Business" magazine, a 25,000-circulation trade publication for the retail gift and home decor industry, has named The Sycamore Tree in Baker City as one of its finalists in the magazine's 2009 Retailer of the Year award.

The Sycamore Tree is one of two retailers to receive the finalist designation; the other is a store in Michigan. The winner of the award is a store in New Hampshire. The magazine chose The Sycamore Tree for the award based on owner Jacki Adams' commitment to the business and her expertise in revamping the store to bring in new customers and increase sales.

Susan Wagner, editor of "Country Business" magazine said in a written statement that judges were "impressed with the changes Adams made in improving store lighting and layout, the new merchandise lines she brought in, including a fresh fudge counter, her interaction with her employees and her involvement with the community."

Every year, "Country Business" selects one winning retailer and two finalists from stores across the country. This year there were more than 25 entries.

As finalists, The Sycamore Tree received recognition during an awards ceremony at the Denver Merchandise Mart in early March. Adams also received an engraved trophy and an article about the business that appears in the March/April 2009 issue of "Country Business."
