PENDLETON - The Bishop Funeral Chapel has new owners.

Jim Caldwell and his wife, Jenny Patty, formerly of Stayton, have purchased the business from longtime owners Sandy and Renee Bishop.

"Everything's going to stay the same," Caldwell said, noting that the business remains in local ownership, not part of a large corporation.

"We serve all faiths," Patty added. "We just want to be really community oriented."

Caldwell and Patty are graduates of the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science. Both are licensed embalmers and funeral directors. He's also certified in eye enucleation by the Oregon Lions Eye Bank.

Caldwell was a partner in Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary in Astoria for more than 25 years until he sold his interest to his partner a few years ago and moved to Stayton, where he worked at Weddle's Funeral Home until moving to Pendleton.

The new owner has been active in industry groups. He spent eight years on the Oregon Mortuary and Cemetery Board, his last two years as president. He also spent three years on the board of the Oregon State Funeral Directors Association.

Bishop Funeral Chapel, 131 S.E. Byers Ave., seats more than 200, Caldwell said. The telephone number is 276-1221.
