The Hermiston School Board unanimously approved Jacque Erickson as interim principal of Highland Hills Elementary School Tuesday night following the resignation of Niki Arnold-Smith.

Smith accepted a principal position in the Tri-Cities.

"We're excited to fill the position from within the school district and to have Ms. Erickson join us," said Assistant Superintendent Wade Smith.

Smith said the staff of Hermiston High School had witnessed Erickson's talents in working with staff and students as a counselor at the school, a position she held for nine years.

The board also approved the completion of the old hospital project, releasing the 5 percent retainer to pay the project's final bills.

In other business, Smith said the board can expect work to start next week on the Ninth Street and Gettman Road improvement project.

Superintendent Fred Maiocco said the board can also expect a report on the total credits earned by students in the now completed summer school program, at the board's work session.

The work session is scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 18, in Room 24 at Armand Larive Middle School, 199 E. Ridgeway Ave.
