BOARDMAN - Pet owners in Boardman now have to pick up after their animals when those pets do what pets do outside.

The City Council adopted Tuesday night the ordinance addressing pet owner responsibility. The issue was raised due to some pet owners allowing their animals to use the soccer fields as a "pit stop."

People found in violation of the ordinance may be cited with a Class A misdemeanor. City Manager Rex Mather said people need to be aware of the new city law new.

"I choose to believe most people with pets and especially people who travel with pets are very responsible," he said.

Mather said dispensers with plastic bags and containers to dispose of animal waste products will be installed to make it more convenient for pet owners to pick up after their animals.

Mather, with assistance from councilors Pam Docken and Lu Ann Huffman, worked with the Youth Advisory Council in developing the ordinance.

Jordan Mittelsdorf, 17, president of the YAC, plays soccer and is well aware of the animal waste issue.

"I thought it was pretty cool Mr. Mather brought it to me and he said, 'I know you play soccer,'" Mittelsdorf said. "We (YAC) thought it would be a cool idea and a good thing to get started on."

Mittelsdorf said the youth council is working on other tasks as well.
