Boardman voters will decide Nov. 4 whether to approve a nearly $14 million bond measure that would pay for a new fire and emergency services station near the SAGE Center.
The Boardman Rural Fire Protection District is seeking to purchase land on Columbia Avenue and Olson Road to build a 38,668-square-foot building that would replace the districtÂ’s current station on Southwest Wilson Lane.
If approved, the new facility would house administrative offices, living quarters for on-duty and student firefighters, classrooms, fire engine bays and a substation for the Morrow County Sheriff's Office. The bond would mature after 31 years.
The fire district, along with the Boardman Police Department and Morrow County Health Services, will host a Community Night Out from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at City Park to provide more information. Free hamburgers and ice cream will be served.
Established in the early 1970s, the Boardman Rural Fire Protection District currently operates on a levy of 74 cents per $1,000 of assessed value. The fire station on Wilson Lane was built 40 years ago, designed to serve a community of 1,500 people. The city's population is now more than 3,200.
