City crew to repair water main

PENDLETON - A city public works crew will begin repairing a water main at the intersection of Southeast Third Street and Hailey Avenue at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Repairs are expected to be completed by late afternoon, but an additional day might be required depending on the conditions in the work area, said Bob Patterson, city public works director.

The city will close Southeast Third Street to through traffic between Southeast Goodwin and Isaac avenues while work is under way, he said. The intersection of Southeast Third Street and Hailey Avenue will be closed to all traffic.

Water shut-off notices will be provided to all affected customers, Patterson said, adding the shut-off would occur after 8 a.m.

Arbor Day Foundation recognizes Echo

ECHO - Echo received its 16th annual Tree City USA award from The National Arbor Day Foundation recently.

The award honors the commitment the city makes to a community forest.

The city was also recognized for progress in publicizing community forestry and its tree planting and maintenance.

Legislative hearings set in Heppner, Pendleton

HERMISTON - Proposals to require proof of citizenship for voter registration and a constitutional amendment to authorize yearly meetings of the Oregon Legislature are two of the issues to be addressed at two legislative hearings this Friday and Saturday in Heppner and Pendleton.

The House Committee on Elections and Rules will meet at the Heppner Grade School at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 8, and at the Pearson Auditorium in the Pendleton Center for the Arts at 214 North Main Street at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

State Rep. Greg Smith, R-Heppner, and state Rep. Bob Jenson, R-Pendleton, will join the committee in their respective districts.

Other legislation under consideration by the committee will be measures related to irrigation district ballots and in Pendleton a proposal to change the definition of business to exclude some certain non-profit corporations.

ECKO House meeting scheduled

HERMISTON - Parents of students in ECKO House at Hermiston High School will meet from 7:30-8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

People attending should check in at the main office.

The parent group meets the first and third Wednesday of each month to discuss ways to support students and teachers.

Commission to meet at Port of Morrow

BOARDMAN - The North East Area Commission on Transportation will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the Port of Morrow.

NEACT, comprising transportation stakeholders from Morrow, Umatilla, Union, Wallowa and Baker counties and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, helps identify and prioritize transportation-related projects in the five-county area.

Among the topics on the agenda is an update on Transportation Enhancement funding proposals, a presentation regarding Connect Oregon and a tour of the new rail spur site at the port.

Updates from the Byways Committee and news from the Oregon Transportation Commission will also be provided.
