Seven Milton-Freewater city department heads and the city manger offered to take a 1 percent pay cut to help the city during the tough economic times, the city council announced in a press release Tuesday.

The 1 percent from each of their salaries adds up to $7,300 per year in salary and payroll taxes.

Department heads approached City Manager Linda Hall last week, and she in turn approached the council Monday night in executive session.

In the released statement, Hall said the council was impressed, stating the department heads were "leading by example" and had shown a genuine commitment to the city and its citizens.

The department heads were Police Chief Doug Boedigheimer, Fire Chief Shane Garner, City Recorder Leanne Steadman, Finance Director Dave Richmond, Electric Superintendent Mike Charlo, Public Works Superintendent Dave Bradshaw and Library Director Bob Jones.
