A state contractor could begin work this week to build new sidewalks and curbs along Southgate.

The Pendleton City Council will consider giving its OK for the Weaver Construction Company to close sidewalks and other pedestrian areas for the construction. The council will meet at 7 tonight in the Council Chambers at city hall, 500 S.W. Dorion Ave.

Weaver Construction has told the city it could close pedestrian areas along Southgate as soon as Friday so it can to start the project. The La Grande construction company will build sidewalks and curbs along both sides of Highway 395 from the intersection of Southwest 20th Street and Southwest Emigrant Avenue to the intersections of Southwest Hailey Avenue and Tutuilla Road.

The concrete work is part of the Oregon Department of Transportation's plan to improve the Interstate 84 eastbound off-ramp, Exit 209.

ODOT hired Weaver Construction as its primary contractor on the project, which began with roadside work in the area in December. Contractors installed underground conduit for illumination and signals to connect the Southwest 20th Street signals with the new lights.

ODOT will coordinate traffic lights from Southwest 20th Street to the intersection at Southwest 30th Street.
