HERMISTON - The Hermiston City Council on Monday approved a "fund exchange" agreement with the Oregon Department of Transportation to pay for local street improvements.

The agreement will trade $159,600 in federal funds for $150,024 in state funds. Part of the reason for the switch, according to a memo from City Engineer Pat Napolitano, is less "administrative management" associated with state money.

The funds will go toward "slurry seal" resurfacing projects on Hermiston streets. Street Superintendent Ron Sivey said the method is increasingly common among other cities, and covers much more area for a smaller cost.
