Dramatic differences in temperatures marked May's weather in both Hermiston and Pendleton, according to National Weather Service records.

Pendleton's average temperature for the month was 58.6 degrees, with the highest temp - 92 degrees - on May 29. The Round-Up city's lowest temperature of 33 degrees was recorded on May 13.

Hermiston's temperatures were even more extreme. Umatilla County's industrial leader had an average temperature of 59.5 degrees. The city's high for the month was 96 degrees on Sunday, May 31. The lowest was 32 degrees on the first day of May.

Rainfall also varied accordingly.

Pendleton had 1.16 inches of rain in May and the yearly total now stands at 7.13 - almost an inch above normal.

Hermiston recorded 0.91 inches of rain for the month, 0.17 below normal. The yearly total is 4.37 inches, or 0.34 inches below normal.

Hermiston's highest wind gust was 51 miles per hour on May 12. Pendleton had the exact same high wind gust on the same day.

Today's high in Pendleton will be near 88 and Hermiston about 92. Higher elevations will be closer to the mid 80s today. Overnight lows will be in the mid 50s

Highs through Wednesday will stay in the high 80s for Pendleton and Hermiston, then drop off going into the weekend. Nighttime lows will stay around the low 50s. Thursday also could have thunderstorms.

The NWS has forecast near normal temperatures and near normal precipitation amounts during June. The normal temperatures for Hermiston are highs averaging 80.4 degrees and lows of 53, with 0.56 inches of precipitation. For Pendleton, normal highs are 78.7 degrees and normal lows of 52. The 30-year normal precipitation is 0.78 inches.
