Drop your ballot here

Jotham Bilch of Pendleton drops of his ballot Tuesday morning at the drop box at the Umatilla County Courthouse in Pendleton. Ballots can be dropped off as late as 8 p.m. today.

Voters in Umatilla and Morrow counties have a few new drop boxes they can use this election.

Umatilla County has added a drop box at the new Nixyaawii Governance Center on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. And Morrow County has added five new drop sites.

Lisa Ganuelas, legislative coordinator for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, is in charge of the drop box, which is accessible today until 8 p.m.

“With the new center, I think we’re actually getting more use (of the drop box),” Ganuelas said.

The tribes have had ballot drop boxes in the past, Ganuelas said, but sometimes it came down to just her making sure ballots got from the tribes to Umatilla County election headquarters in Pendleton. Now, she said, that process has more oversight.

Umatilla County has a list of people approved to pick up the ballots, she said, and they must let tribal officials know about the pick up.

Tonight, though, county officials won’t be taking the ballots. Ganuelas said the duty will fall to the Umatilla Tribal Police Department.

Over in Morrow County, Clerk Bobbi Childers said there now are drop boxes at the Irrigon Justice Court Building, one in front of the Morrow County Courthouse in Heppner and one in Lexington in front of the county’s public works building. Additionally, she said in an e-mail, the county now has drop boxes inside the Bank of Eastern Oregon in Ione and inside the Boardman City Hall.

Polls close tonight at 8 in Oregon.

Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown has predicted voter turnout will be about 72 percent.
