HERMISTON — The Umatilla County Fair Board has extended the deadline for applications for the 2011 Umatilla County Fair Court.

Applications are due along with three letters of recommendation plus a picture by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 in the Umatilla County Fair office, 515 W. Orchard Ave., or mailed to P.O. Box 94, Hermiston, OR 97838.

“This year, after many requests, we have changed the format of the Fair Court to a non-equestrian court,” said Peggy Clough, fair manager. “Years ago, they had non-equestrian courts.”

The original deadline was Nov. 1, but the fair office had received just four applications then.

“We usually have 12-14,” she said.

Clough said the application process was reopened because of numerous requests from potential applicants.

“Several students at various schools we talked to had not received this information and we wanted to be sure it has been distributed through all the schools and 4-H clubs as well as FFA,” she said.

To be eligible, girls must be Umatilla County residents 16-20 years old before Oct. 1, 2010. They must be enrolled in school or have a high school diploma. Those in school must maintain a 2.5 grade-point average.

Clough said serving on the fair court is a great opportunity for young women.

“We want them to be ambassadors for the county, not just the fair,” she said.
