BOARDMAN - A fire at Boardman Chip Company at the Port of Morrow got firefighters out of bed early this morning.
Six workers at the plant, including Manager Kevin Troxell, noticed smoke coming from a central wood chipping apparatus at around 6:30 a.m. After Boardman firefighters arrived, they worked for about 45 minutes to put out the fire. They were hampered by a steel casing that surrounds the wood chippers, said Boardman Fire Chief Marc Rogelstad.
"It took a little while to get to it (the fire)," he said.
Troxell said the company has not figured out what caused the fire. Because the chipper was "kind of the heart of the outfit," he said, it has put the company out of commission until it can be fixed, which he estimated would take two days.
