HERMISTON — Clara Beas Fitzgerald will be sworn in as Hermiston’s newest city councilor during the council’s next meeting.

Beas Fitzgerald will replace George Anderson, who resigned his seat before his term expired at the end of the year. Beas Fitzgerald was already slated to take over his seat in 2015 after being elected to the position.

Beas Fitzgerald was the only applicant to fill the rest of Anderson’s term. The city council approved the selection committee’s recommendation on Monday night to add her to the council. She will take her seat with the rest of the council Aug. 25 after being sworn in.

The meeting was also City Manager Ed Brookshier’s last as city manager. Byron Smith begins his first day on the job on the Aug. 25 and will attend his first council meeting that evening.

Councilwoman Jackie Myers said the council wanted to celebrate Brookshier’s last meeting but he was adamant that nothing special be done to mark the occasion before, during or after the meeting.

Everyone in the council chambers gave him a standing ovation anyway. Mayor David Drotzmann thanked Brookshier for his years of dedicated service to the community.

“You’ve accomplished a tremendous amount ... I don’t think there has ever been a question where your heart and your home is,” Drotzmann said.
