The Giving Tree has brought smiles to the faces of hundreds of local families. In continuing the tradition, Hamley and Co. and the radio stations of the Capps Broadcast Group once again have teamed up with Pendleton School District elementary schools, the Oregon State Department of Human Services, the Umatilla County Commission on Children and Families and Umatilla County Youth Services to sponsor the Giving Tree.

The Giving Tree will go up today at Hamley’s Western Store, 30 S.E. Court Ave., Pendleton. The tree will be covered with anonymous tags that list the ages, sizes and needs of children facing an uncertain Christmas.

Local citizens, businesses and groups are encouraged to select tags and shop for items on the list. The new, unwrapped items are then returned to Hamley’s and distributed to the families by the agencies involved.

Those who would like to help are encouraged to stop by Hamley’s and pick tags off the tree. Volunteers to help wrap gifts are needed and cash donations also will be accepted. In appreciation of donations made, participants will receive a special Hamley’s discount. The deadline for gift return Tuesday Dec. 14.

The Giving Tree has helped local families experience a little Christmas joy since 2000. For more information, contact Melvalee Carter at 541-278-5447, Carolyn Pierson at 541-278-1100 or Julie Thompson at 541-276-1511.
